Hemp CBD & The Possibility of Drug Interaction

by Stephanie Burner April 10, 2019

CBD from Industrial hemp has a great reputation for its safety and efficacy and for good reason! It is well-received by most humans and animals with its non-addictive and non-intoxicating balancing effects. Because of this, it’s important to know when and why hemp CBD may not behave well with others. Others in this instance, meaning medications and/or herbs. Caution is often taken when mixing CBD with blood-thinning or cholesterol-lowering prescriptions because of CYP450 as it plays a role in deciding which meds and what dose will be effective for a patient. Let’s discuss what it is, what it means for CBD users and how we can advance the safe and practical use of Hemp CBD oil by knowing more about it.

Cytochrome P450

It seems like we’re always discussing a term we’ve never heard before when CBD comes up, doesn’t it?! Why stop now? 😃 Introducing CYP450 – this family of over 50 unique liver enzymes is essential for metabolizing many medications, with 6 enzymes breaking down 90% of western meds. The enzymes are either inhibited or induced by a drug determining how it will work in our body. The CYP450 group also plays a major role in detoxification and is essential for producing cholesterol and steroids – important stuff!

CBD Oil and CYP450

So how does it relate to CBD? Well, according to recent research, taking CBD oil with certain drugs can deactivate P450 enzymes which may alter the way the drug (and possibly the CBD oil) is metabolized. This may result in overperforming or underperforming outcomes and the user may experience unwanted side effects. No deaths are correlated to CBD use, but we should not ignore these possible interactions. Talking with your doctor about your medications and CBD oil is high priority if you are currently taking something that advises against the intake of other commonly used foods/herbs that also interfere with CYP450 like: Grapefruit, St. John’s Wort, Watercress and Goldenseal. Combining CBD with chemotherapy should also be carefully considered, as higher blood concentrations of chemo can lead to higher accumulation of toxicity. Luckily, there is a test for the functionality of the CYP450 enzyme group.

On another note, new research is revealing how CBD can help us use less of the toxic, chemically-inclined prescriptions while continuing to help alleviate side-effects when combined safely with those meds.

Knowledge is Power

Our aim is not to scare anyone away from trying hemp CBD oil, or from continuing to use it. We want to be sure you know what we know; so, we pass the latest and most important information on to the consumer. DREEM wants you to know Hemp & CBD from all angles so that you can make educated decisions for your supplement and wellness needs!

Well-known Israeli cannabis researcher, Professor Robert Mechoulam stated, “All drugs, starting from aspirin to valium, have side effects. One has to know how to use them.” We’re heading in the right direction. Continue to support hemp farming and hemp research so that we can reap the rewards with proper use of CBD Oil ❤

For Your Reference

Any drug metabolized by CYP450 enzymes could potentially interact with cannabidiol. According to the Indiana University Department of Medicine, drugs known to use the CYP450 system include:

  • Steroids
  • HMG CoA reductase inhibitors
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Antihistamines
  • Prokinetics
  • HIV antivirals
  • Immune modulators
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Antiarrythmics
  • Antibiotics
  • Anesthetics
  • Antipsychotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-epileptics
  • Beta blockers
  • PPIs
  • NSAIDs
  • Angiotension II blockers
  • Oral hypoglycemic agents
  • Sulfonylureas

Meds known as “prodrugs” need to be metabolized to produce the therapeutic compound, so they are inactive until processed by the body into the active drug. Codeine, Vyvanse and Concerta are examples of this.

What if CBD isn't working for me? Troubleshooting Guide!!

by Stephanie Burner January 10, 2019

Honestly, the idea of CBD not working for someone is hard for me to hear. I want people to be well and it seems unfair! Though not often, it does come up and we are paving the road to greater understanding when we share our genuine experiences. It is always a good idea to be honest about how something is or isn’t working in your body! It’s easy to become very frustrated when you try CBD every which way and feel nothing. Or you find relief and then the body stops responding the same way it did months ago, at the same dose. Because we are all unique biologically and because things can change at a moment’s notice on a cellular level, this is normal and to be expected so don’t give up on yourself or your Endocannabinoid System. Below, I offer some suggestions for those who have experienced a lackluster effect from CBD.

Supporting the System: What is Endocannabinoid Deficiency?

Endocannabinoid deficiency is exactly what it sounds like – one’s body lacks endocannabinoids or the proper functioning of receptors creating a weakened system. It’s very real and backed by decades of research. When supplementing with hemp products, consumers really ought to know how to support and optimize the system! There’s a bit of ground to cover but I’ll keep it simple.
